Prime Minister urges stronger action against human trafficking networks, emphasizing victim protection, public awareness and international cooperation on World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — WEB DESK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to intensify operations against human trafficking networks, saying victims of the crime should be treated as survivors in need of protection rather than as criminals.
In a message issued to mark the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to combating human trafficking through coordinated national and international efforts.
Human Trafficking a Serious Human Rights Violation
Shehbaz Sharif described human trafficking as not only a transnational crime but also one of the gravest violations of human rights.
He said effectively tackling the crime requires a comprehensive strategy involving legal, administrative, social and institutional measures, as well as international cooperation.
According to the prime minister, human trafficking is closely linked to other forms of organized crime, including irregular migration, forged travel documents, money laundering and forced labour.
Crackdown on Smuggling Networks
The prime minister said the government has developed a proactive strategy aimed at disrupting trafficking and smuggling networks before crimes occur.
He added that all law enforcement agencies, particularly the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), have been directed to strengthen preventive and enforcement measures against organized trafficking groups.
International Cooperation
Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan is working closely with provincial governments, local law enforcement agencies and international partners, including INTERPOL and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), to strengthen efforts against human trafficking.
He stressed that cooperation among national institutions and international organizations is essential to dismantle transnational trafficking networks.
Public Awareness and Victim Protection
The prime minister urged citizens to report suspicious activities through FIA helplines and official reporting portals, saying public awareness and civic responsibility are vital in preventing trafficking.
He emphasized that victims of human trafficking should receive legal protection, psychological support and rehabilitation services.
“Victims are not criminals; they are survivors who deserve compassion, protection and support to rebuild their lives,” the prime minister said.
He added that the government remains committed to ensuring affected individuals receive the legal assistance, mental health support and rehabilitation needed to reintegrate into society with dignity.
