Pakistan Secures Another Spot LNG Cargo as Energy Demand Surges

Date:

Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: Pakistan has secured an additional spot cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet rising energy demand, with state-owned Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) awarding the contract to BP Singapore at the lowest bid of $18.2345 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), official sources confirmed . The 140,000-cubic-metre cargo is scheduled for delivery on July 15-16 at the Pakistan GasPort Consortium Limited (PGPCL) terminal at Port Qasim, Karachi .

Competitive Bidding Process
PLL received three technically and commercially responsive bids for the tender floated on July 9, 2026 . BP Singapore’s winning bid of $18.2345/MMBtu was significantly lower than competing offers from PetroChina International at $18.5991/MMBtu and TotalEnergies Gas & Power at $18.7200/MMBtu . The contract was awarded after the PLL Board approved the lowest evaluated bid .

Supply Disruptions Drive Spot Purchases
The latest procurement comes amid continued disruption to Qatar’s LNG supplies under Pakistan’s long-term government-to-government agreement . QatarEnergy has extended force majeure on deliveries to Pakistan until August, following an attack on the Ras Laffan LNG Complex in March and ongoing security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz . As a result, Pakistan has been forced to rely on the more expensive spot market to meet electricity generation needs during peak summer demand .

Total Imports Reach 10 Cargoes
With the arrival of the BP Singapore shipment, Pakistan’s total LNG imports since the US-Iran conflict began on February 28, 2026, will reach 10 cargoes . This includes five long-term term cargoes supplied by QatarEnergy under the GtG agreement and five spot cargoes procured through competitive bidding . The country previously secured spot cargoes in April, June, and early July to address supply gaps .
