Beijing, China – Web Desk: Pakistan Navy has formally commissioned its first Hangor-class submarine, developed with Chinese cooperation, marking a significant milestone in the country’s naval modernization efforts.
The commissioning ceremony was held in China, with President Asif Ali Zardari attending as the chief guest. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf was also present at the event, according to Pakistan’s military media wing.
Speaking on the occasion, President Zardari described the induction of the Hangor submarine as a historic step in strengthening Pakistan’s maritime capabilities. He said the country is fully capable of defending its sovereignty, safeguarding maritime interests, and securing key economic corridors.
Admiral Naveed Ashraf highlighted the strategic importance of uninterrupted sea lanes, noting that any disruption poses a serious threat to global trade and energy supply. He added that the Hangor-class submarines will play a vital role in deterring aggression and ensuring the security of critical maritime routes in the Arabian Sea.
The naval chief also recalled the legacy of the original Hangor submarine, which sank an enemy vessel during the 1971 war — the first such incident since World War II.
Equipped with advanced air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology, modern sonar systems, stealth design, and extended underwater endurance, the new Hangor-class submarines significantly enhance Pakistan Navy’s operational capabilities.
Officials said the project represents a new chapter in the long-standing defense partnership between Pakistan and China. The Prime Minister and the Chief of Defence Forces congratulated the nation and the Pakistan Navy on achieving this milestone.
