Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a landmark diplomatic achievement with the electronic signing of the historic “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran .
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister confirmed that both the American and Iranian presidents had digitally signed the agreement, with Pakistan serving as the primary mediator and co-signatory .
“I am honoured to announce that the historic ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ has been electronically signed today between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Sharif wrote .
Immediate Implementation
The memorandum takes immediate effect, with Iran agreeing to immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping while the United States will simultaneously lift its naval blockade .
Pakistan, in collaboration with co-mediator Qatar, will host a formal commemorative ceremony in Switzerland on June 19 to mark the historic breakthrough and begin technical-level negotiations between the two countries .
Key Roles Acknowledged
Prime Minister Sharif paid tribute to President Donald Trump for his diplomatic commitment and preference for peaceful resolution of conflicts, which averted a crisis that could have had devastating consequences for the region and the world .
He also acknowledged the contributions of the US negotiating team, including Vice President JD Vance, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, who played crucial roles in finalizing the agreement .
On the Iranian side, Sharif praised the vision and leadership of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, along with the Iranian negotiating team comprising Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Abbas Araghchi, and Eskandar Momeni .
Special Recognition for Pakistan’s Leadership
The Prime Minister made special mention of Field Marshal Asim Munir, whose “relentless efforts, selfless commitment, and behind-the-scenes diplomatic role were decisive in making this breakthrough possible” .
Sharif also acknowledged the constructive participation and diplomatic cooperation of Qatar’s leadership, while describing the roles of Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt as indispensable and critically important .

Prime Minister Sharif expressed hope that the Islamabad Memorandum would serve as a strong and lasting foundation for better mutual understanding, respect, trust, and shared prosperity in the region, and would open new doors for peace and cooperation in the future .
