Pakistan Gas Shortage Threatens Power Supply, CNG Shutdown

Date:

Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: A worsening natural gas shortage in Pakistan is expected to disrupt electricity generation and halt supply to the compressed natural gas (CNG) sector, raising concerns over potential power outages in the coming weeks.

According to official sources, gas availability for power plants is set to drop significantly from April, with supplies expected to fall to around 80 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD), compared to approximately 150 MMCFD received in March.

The decline is partly attributed to the suspension of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, which had been supplementing domestic supply. As a result, authorities are considering a complete shutdown of gas supply to the CNG sector to prioritize electricity generation.

Sources said between 25 and 30 MMCFD of gas will be diverted to the power sector, while supplies allocated to the fertilizer industry may also be redirected to support electricity production amid rising demand.

The energy shortfall is further compounded by coal supply constraints at key power plants. Facilities in Sahiwal and Jamshoro are reportedly operating with limited coal reserves, sufficient for only three to seven days.

As a result, between 1,500 and 1,800 megawatts of coal-based electricity generation is at risk, potentially reducing overall power output by 10 to 15 percent nationwide.

Energy experts warn that the combined gas and coal shortages could lead to an increase in load-shedding by two to three hours in various parts of the country.

Meanwhile, Sui Southern Gas Company has also reported supply disruptions due to technical issues at two gas fields, further tightening availability.

A company spokesperson said authorities are closely monitoring the situation and working to resolve the unexpected shortfall as quickly as possible.

The developing energy crisis highlights ongoing challenges in Pakistan’s fuel supply chain and underscores the need for long-term solutions to ensure energy security and stabilize electricity generation.
