FO condemns Indian defence minister’s remarks, warns against aggression

Date:

Pakistan’s Foreign Office says any Indian aggression will draw a forceful response after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh warns of a stronger strike following any future cross-border terrorist attack.

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Pakistan’s Foreign Office has condemned remarks by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh concerning a possible military response to future cross-border terrorist activity, warning that any aggression against Pakistan would be met with a forceful response.

Foreign Office spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan delivered the response during his weekly media briefing in Islamabad on Friday, October 16, describing Singh’s comments as provocative and warning of the risks they pose to regional peace and stability.

The statement followed remarks Singh made on Thursday, in which he warned that any fresh terrorist activity originating across the border would invite a strike stronger than the previous one, according to reporting by Indian news agency ANI.

Pakistan Warns Against Further Military Escalation

Pakistan rejected Singh’s remarks and said it remained prepared to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“The restraint and commitment to peace” demonstrated by Pakistan should not be interpreted as weakness, Haider said, adding that any aggression would receive a forceful response.

The spokesperson urged India to abandon what Pakistan described as belligerent rhetoric and act responsibly to support lasting peace in South Asia.

He also referred to the military confrontation between the two neighbouring countries in May 2025, saying Pakistan had demonstrated its ability and determination to defend its territory.

The comments reflect Islamabad’s official position on the latest exchange. They do not, by themselves, establish that either country has made a new decision to initiate military action.

What Did Rajnath Singh Say?

According to ANI, Singh warned that any fresh terrorist activity coming from across the border would trigger a stronger Indian strike than the previous operation.

His remarks were reported on Thursday, October 15, a day before Pakistan’s Foreign Office responded publicly.

The Indian defence minister’s statement linked a potential military response to future cross-border terrorist activity. The Pakistani response, meanwhile, focused on the implications of such rhetoric for bilateral relations and regional security.

The competing positions highlight the continuing dispute between the two countries over cross-border security and the risk that future incidents could lead to renewed confrontation.

Background: Pakistan-India Military Confrontation in May 2025

Pakistan and India experienced a brief but serious military confrontation in May 2025, following a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir and subsequent military action.

India linked the attack to militants it accused of having connections to Pakistan. Islamabad rejected the allegations.

The two countries subsequently exchanged military strikes before hostilities were brought to a halt.

The events remain an important backdrop to current statements from officials in both countries. However, responsibility for specific incidents and competing accounts of military operations should be assessed against independently verifiable evidence and attributed to the relevant parties.

Kashmir Dispute Remains a Point of Tension

During Friday’s briefing, the Foreign Office spokesperson also addressed questions concerning the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region.

Haider reiterated Pakistan’s position that India’s August 5, 2019, decision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status could not determine the territory’s final status.

He said Pakistan continued to regard Jammu and Kashmir as an internationally recognised disputed territory whose future should be determined in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people.

India administers the territory and maintains its own position on its constitutional status. Pakistan and India have long-standing and competing claims over the region.

Regional Security and Diplomatic Implications

The latest exchange underscores the continuing strain in Pakistan-India relations, particularly over terrorism allegations, military deterrence and the Kashmir dispute.

Public warnings of retaliation can increase diplomatic pressure and raise concerns about escalation, especially between neighbouring countries with a history of military confrontation.

Neither side’s statements alone establish that a new conflict is imminent. The immediate significance of the exchange will depend on subsequent official actions, diplomatic contacts and developments along the border.

For now, Pakistan’s stated position is that it remains committed to peace while reserving the right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Further official statements from New Delhi or Islamabad could provide additional context on whether the latest remarks lead to any diplomatic or security developments.
