Pakistan Blocks Millions of Online Links Against Illegal Content

Date:

Over 1.4 million URLs blocked for anti-religion, anti-state, and immoral content

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has intensified its crackdown on online platforms distributing content against religion, the state, and public morality, blocking over 1.48 million links across multiple social media and digital platforms.

According to authorities, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has conducted extensive monitoring and enforcement measures to curb the spread of illegal and inappropriate content. Facebook and TikTok accounted for the highest number of blocked links. On Facebook, over 229,000 links were reviewed, resulting in 197,000 blocked links. TikTok faced the strictest action, with more than 174,000 links reviewed and over 163,000 blocked, representing a 94% blocking rate.

Instagram saw 43,000 URLs checked, with 38,000 removed, reflecting an 87% block rate. YouTube had 72,000 links examined, of which over 64,000 were blocked. X (formerly Twitter) had 112,000 links reviewed, with 70,800 blocked, the lowest block rate at 62%. Other platforms collectively accounted for 898,000 links, of which 891,000 were blocked.

The enforcement primarily targeted content insulting religion, public morality, and the state, along with hate speech, obscenity, proxy-based content, and content undermining Pakistan’s defense. Over 1.06 million links were blocked for obscene or immoral content, more than 109,000 for anti-religion content, 76,000 for sectarian or hate material, and 148,000 for content against the state and national defense. Content related to defamation or fake identities recorded the lowest blocking rate.

The PTA emphasized that this effort aims to create a safer digital environment, promoting responsible online behavior while protecting religious, ethical, and national values. The move comes amid rising concerns over the unchecked spread of harmful content on social media and other online platforms, which could threaten social cohesion and national security.

Officials have urged citizens to report unlawful content and comply with the digital code of conduct. The crackdown reflects Pakistan’s broader commitment to regulate online spaces while balancing freedom of expression and the public interest. Experts note that these measures could also help curb the proliferation of fake news, hate campaigns, and extremist content, contributing to a more secure and responsible online ecosystem.
