Pakistan and Brazil Agree to Strengthen Bilateral Defence Cooperation

RAWALPINDI, October 12: Pakistan and Brazil have agreed to strengthen bilateral defence and security cooperation following a meeting between Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, and Admiral Renato Rodrigues de Aguiar Freire, chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Brazil’s Armed Forces.

The meeting took place at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Monday, where the Brazilian military chief arrived with a high-level delegation.

According to Pakistan’s military media wing, the visiting admiral was received with a guard of honour presented by a tri-services contingent.

Talks focus on military collaboration and regional security

During the meeting, the two sides discussed matters of mutual interest, the regional security environment and opportunities to expand bilateral defence and security cooperation.

Both delegations expressed satisfaction with the longstanding relations between Pakistan and Brazil and agreed to further strengthen military-to-military collaboration.

Field Marshal Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to developing defence ties with Brazil, while Admiral Freire praised the professionalism and operational preparedness of Pakistan’s armed forces.

The visiting military chief also acknowledged the role of Pakistan’s armed forces in supporting regional peace and stability, according to the military’s statement.

Longstanding ties between Pakistan and Brazil

Pakistan and Brazil maintain diplomatic relations and have pursued cooperation in several areas, including defence. A bilateral memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation was signed in 2019, providing a framework for further engagement between the two countries.

The latest meeting signals continued interest in expanding military contacts and identifying opportunities for closer collaboration. However, the announcement did not specify any new defence agreement, joint procurement arrangement, weapons deal or timetable for additional activities.

Further cooperation under discussion

The visit reflects the two countries’ stated intention to deepen defence and security relations through continued dialogue and military-to-military engagement.

The discussions come as Pakistan maintains defence partnerships with countries across different regions, while Brazil continues its international military and diplomatic engagement.

No specific new agreement or operational commitment was announced in the report. Further details about possible joint exercises, training programmes or defence-industry cooperation would depend on subsequent announcements from the relevant authorities.
