PTI confirms Mahmood Khan Achakzai as sole nominee; Speaker Ayaz Sadiq assures early notification
The appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in Pakistan’s National Assembly is set to be finalized on Thursday after all objections to the nomination were resolved, PTI leader Barrister Gohar confirmed on Tuesday.
Senior PTI leaders, including Barrister Gohar, Asad Qaiser, and Chief Whip Malik Aamir Dogar, held a meeting with National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to discuss the long-pending matter. Federal Minister Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry was also present during the talks.
Chief Whip Aamir Dogar stated that the opposition had submitted a single, unified nomination in the name of Mahmood Khan Achakzai, with no rival candidates. Former Speaker Asad Qaiser confirmed that all constitutional and procedural requirements had been fulfilled.
Barrister Gohar said the nomination papers would be verified by Thursday, after which the opposition leader would be formally notified, allowing the opposition to assume its role in the upcoming National Assembly session. He added that the process for appointing the opposition leader in the Senate would follow.
The development signals an end to prolonged uncertainty surrounding opposition leadership in parliament.
