Oil Prices Rise as Middle East Supply Risks and Shipping Threats Rattle Markets

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK, October 21, 2026: Global oil prices rose on Wednesday as escalating tensions in the Middle East heightened concerns about possible supply disruptions, while falling US crude and petroleum-product inventories added further support to prices.

Brent crude futures increased by $1.59, or 1.5%, to $110.38 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained $1.36, or 1.4%, to $99.18 per barrel, according to Reuters market reporting at 0350 GMT.

The gains followed a volatile trading session on Tuesday, when oil prices eased from recent highs amid renewed diplomatic efforts involving Iran and Pakistan. However, investors remained concerned that a political settlement could take time and that regional security risks could continue to disrupt energy shipments.

Middle East Tensions Raise Supply Concerns

Market sentiment remained sensitive to developments affecting oil-producing countries and major shipping routes in the Middle East.

Maritime security concerns have expanded beyond the Strait of Hormuz, with reports of attacks on commercial vessels adding to uncertainty over the movement of crude oil and petroleum products.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy said a supertanker caught fire after striking a sea mine south of the Strait of Hormuz. The circumstances were reported by Iranian media, and the account could not be independently verified from the available information.

Shipping risks are particularly significant because disruptions to tanker movements can delay deliveries, raise insurance costs and increase freight charges for energy companies.

Traders are also monitoring reports of threats to Saudi energy infrastructure and attacks claimed by Yemen’s Houthi movement. Such developments have contributed to concerns about the reliability of regional oil supplies.

Falling US Inventories Add to Price Pressure

Oil prices also received support from a reported decline in US crude oil and petroleum-product inventories.

Data cited from the American Petroleum Institute indicated that US crude stocks fell by 4.9 million barrels in the week ending October 16. Declining inventories can indicate tighter available supplies and may strengthen prices when demand remains firm.

Market participants are watching for further inventory data and indications of how refiners and governments will respond to tighter fuel supplies, particularly in the diesel market.

The combination of geopolitical uncertainty and lower stockpiles has increased short-term volatility in oil futures.

Diplomatic Efforts Remain in Focus

Investors are also assessing efforts to revive diplomatic engagement involving Iran, with Pakistan and Qatar mentioned in market discussions as possible facilitators of negotiations.

Earlier talks had raised some optimism that a diplomatic breakthrough could ease pressure on energy markets. However, traders remain cautious because an agreement has not been confirmed and regional security concerns persist.

Any sustained reduction in tensions could ease the risk premium built into oil prices. Conversely, further disruption to shipping routes or energy infrastructure could put additional upward pressure on crude and refined-product prices.

Impact on Global Energy Markets

Higher international crude prices can increase costs for refineries, transport companies and fuel-importing economies. If elevated prices persist, consumers may face additional pressure from petrol, diesel, freight and production costs.

For countries dependent on imported petroleum, the eventual domestic impact will also depend on exchange rates, government pricing decisions, taxes and the cost of refined products.

Oil markets are expected to remain sensitive to developments in the Middle East, US inventory figures and signs of progress in diplomatic efforts.
