Nepal Deploys Cargo Drones to Deliver Aid After Deadly Glacier Floods
DEVIGHAT, NEPAL — WEB DESK: Nepal’s army has turned to heavy-lift cargo drones to deliver food, medicine, fuel and other essential supplies to communities isolated by catastrophic floods that have killed at least 1,367 people and left more than 5,000 missing.
The disaster began after a Himalayan glacier broke off near the Nepal-China border in late August, unleashing a destructive torrent of water, ice, rock and mud through downstream communities. Roads and bridges were destroyed, leaving conventional relief vehicles unable to reach some affected areas.
With much of Nepal’s helicopter capacity already committed to search-and-rescue operations, drones are increasingly filling the logistics gap.
Cargo Drones Carry Up to 60kg
The drones being used for relief operations can transport loads weighing up to 60 kilograms (132 pounds) on individual missions.
They are typically operating across distances of around three to four kilometres, according to personnel involved in the relief effort.
Santosh Budhathoki, a contract drone pilot working with the Nepal Army, said helicopters were heavily occupied with rescue missions, making drones one of the most practical ways of getting essential supplies to stranded residents.
The technology allows relief teams to bypass damaged bridges, blocked roads and dangerous terrain.
China Donates Four Heavy-Lift Drones
The Nepal Army is operating a fleet of four DJI FlyCart 100 cargo drones donated by China as part of a recent humanitarian assistance package.
The aircraft are currently completing around 10 to 16 relief deliveries each day.
DJI describes the FlyCart series as cargo-delivery drones designed for transportation in challenging environments.
In Nepal, that capability has become particularly useful because the country’s mountainous terrain can make ground transportation difficult even under normal circumstances.
Following the floods, many conventional routes have become unusable.
Food, Medicine and Fuel Flown to Isolated Communities
The drones are transporting essential supplies including food, medicines and fuel to people cut off from regular supply routes.
Reuters footage from Devighat in Nepal’s Nuwakot district showed army personnel preparing aid packages before cargo drones carried them across the flood-affected Trishuli River.
The operations demonstrate an emerging role for unmanned aircraft in humanitarian emergencies where conventional transport infrastructure has been destroyed.
Unlike helicopters, cargo drones do not require pilots to enter potentially dangerous flight areas and can operate repeatedly across relatively short routes.
Drones Also Used in Search and Rescue
Their role extends beyond delivering humanitarian aid.
Reconnaissance drones are being extensively deployed in search-and-rescue operations, helping emergency teams survey areas that are difficult or dangerous to reach on foot.
Cargo drones have also been used to transport the bodies of flood victims from some affected areas, according to Reuters.
Australia has separately sent specialist drone operators to Nepal to assist with searches for missing people.
A 15-member Australian Disaster Assistance Response Team includes emergency drone pilots equipped with technology capable of surveying large areas and confined spaces.
Why Drones Are Effective in Nepal
Nepal’s geography makes drone operations particularly useful.
The country contains some of the world’s most difficult mountainous terrain, where villages can be separated by steep valleys, rivers and limited road networks.
Milan Pandey of Nepalese drone operator Airlift Technology said drones can provide a faster and cheaper transportation option in such conditions.
In a major disaster, that advantage becomes more significant because bridges and roads that normally connect isolated communities may disappear entirely.
Drones can fly directly across those obstacles.
Floods Follow Himalayan Glacier Collapse
The disaster was triggered on August 26 when a glacier collapse sent enormous quantities of water, ice, rock and mud through the Trishuli River system near Nepal’s border with China.
The floods destroyed settlements, roads, bridges, homes and energy infrastructure.
At least 1,367 deaths had been confirmed in Nepal by September 9, while more than 5,000 people remained missing, according to Reuters’ latest reporting on the drone operations.
Death and missing-person figures have changed repeatedly as rescue teams reach new locations, meaning casualty totals should be treated as developing.
Hydropower Facilities Devastated
Nepal’s hydropower sector has suffered particularly severe damage.
Hundreds of workers were reported missing from several hydroelectric facilities following the floods, with rescuers focusing on tunnels where some workers may have survived.
By September 7, officials estimated that 121 of around 900 missing hydropower workers could be trapped inside tunnel networks.
Specialist teams have been using excavation equipment and other methods to access damaged facilities.
Some survivors have been found days after the disaster, sustaining hopes that others could still be located.
Damage Estimated at $2.56 Billion
The economic consequences are also becoming clearer.
Nepal’s disaster authority estimated property, housing and infrastructure losses at approximately 387.5 billion Nepalese rupees, equivalent to about $2.56 billion.
At least 7,500 homes were destroyed, while officials estimate around 20,000 houses will ultimately need rebuilding.
An initial estimate put immediate early-recovery needs for roads, temporary shelters, drinking water and power restoration at about $52.6 million.
Those figures remain preliminary as authorities continue assessing the affected regions.
Nepal Seeks $5 Billion in International Assistance
The government is now seeking approximately $5 billion in international assistance for recovery and reconstruction.
Nepalese officials are framing the appeal partly around climate justice, arguing that the Himalayan country contributes relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions while facing severe consequences from climate-related hazards.
The government plans to make its case to international institutions including the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah is also expected to raise Nepal’s position during his address to the United Nations later this month.
Climate Link Requires Careful Interpretation
The immediate trigger for the disaster was a glacier collapse in the Himalayan region.
Scientists have long warned that rising temperatures are changing glaciers and increasing hazards across high-mountain regions.
However, determining exactly how much human-caused climate change contributed to this individual glacier collapse requires dedicated scientific attribution research.
It is therefore more accurate at this stage to describe the disaster as a glacier-triggered flood occurring against the broader background of climate risks facing the Himalayas rather than attributing the individual event solely to climate change.
Technology Becomes Lifeline After Disaster
The drone operation illustrates how emergency logistics are changing as unmanned aircraft become capable of carrying increasingly heavy loads.
In Nepal, the technology is not replacing helicopters or conventional relief networks.
Instead, drones are filling a specific gap: delivering relatively small but urgently needed loads across short distances where roads and bridges no longer exist and helicopters are needed for higher-priority rescue operations.
With thousands still missing and entire communities struggling to reconnect with the outside world, that capability has become an important part of Nepal’s emergency response.
For isolated residents, each flight can mean access to food, medicine or fuel while reconstruction of the country’s devastated transport infrastructure remains months or years away.
