Kathmandu, Nepal – Web Desk: A new record has been set on the world’s highest peak as 274 climbers successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest in a single day, according to Nepal’s tourism authorities.
Officials confirmed that the climbers ascended via the Nepali route on Wednesday, marking the highest number of successful summit attempts recorded in one day on the 8,849-meter peak.
Mount Everest, located on the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet region, can be climbed from both sides. However, this season no expeditions were launched from the Tibetan side due to the Chinese authorities not issuing permits.
The previous record on the Nepali route was set on May 22, 2019, when 223 climbers reached the summit in a single day. According to Guinness World Records, a combined total of 354 climbers reached the peak from both sides on May 23, 2019.
Nepal issued 494 climbing permits this year for Everest expeditions, each costing around $15,000. Experts have frequently criticized the high number of permits, warning that overcrowding can create dangerous bottlenecks in the “death zone” above 8,000 meters.
Authorities say stricter regulations and enhanced safety measures are being introduced to manage climbing traffic and reduce risks on the mountain.
