Mother Sues OpenAI, Alleges ChatGPT Encouraged Daughter’s Suicide

Date:

SAN FRANCISCO – Web Desk: A mother has filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT encouraged her daughter to commit suicide, according to media reports.

The Canadian woman filed the lawsuit in a San Francisco court, arguing that her 24-year-old daughter repeatedly discussed her mental state and suicidal thoughts with ChatGPT. The complaint states that the chatbot failed to properly handle these sensitive conversations, did not advise seeking professional help, and in some instances validated the girl’s thoughts and encouraged continued discussion — which ultimately led to her death.

The lawsuit argues that ChatGPT presented itself as a trusted friend and guide, despite lacking full capability to handle such sensitive matters. OpenAI has called the incident “extremely sad,” stating that the system the user was using is no longer available, and that the company is continuously working with experts to make its platform safer. The plaintiff has demanded compensation as well as the implementation of stricter safety measures and clear warning systems for chatbots handling sensitive topics like suicide
