Meta to Shut Down Messenger App in Major Platform Shift

Date:

ASHINGTON, United States – Web Desk: Meta Platforms, Inc. has announced plans to discontinue its standalone Messenger application, confirming that the service will be fully deactivated on 15 April 2026.

According to global media reports, the decision means users will no longer be able to send or receive messages, photos, videos, or documents through the app after the shutdown date. Any attempt to access Messenger will redirect users to messaging features integrated within Facebook.

Meta stated that it has begun informing users in advance to allow time for transition to alternative communication methods. The company emphasized that messaging capabilities will remain available through Facebook’s built-in messaging system.

Messenger has long been a core communication tool within Meta’s ecosystem, operating alongside WhatsApp and Instagram. The shutdown represents a strategic shift in how Meta consolidates messaging services within its broader platform architecture.

Industry analysts suggest the move may streamline Meta’s messaging operations but could also impact users who rely on Messenger as a standalone communication tool. The company has not detailed plans regarding data retention or migration options beyond integration with Facebook’s messaging system.

Meta continues to encourage users to explore alternative messaging solutions and has pledged to provide further guidance ahead of the application’s deactivation.
