Karachi: (Staff Reporter) Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced a significant new initiative aimed at improving manhole covers and streetlights across the city.

According to the Mayor, every Union Committee will now receive Rs 100,000 per month exclusively for the repair and replacement of manhole covers and the maintenance of streetlights. Under the previous system, each Union Committee was allocated Rs 500,000.

Wahab stated that the matter was presented before the provincial leadership, after which the Sindh government approved an increase in the overall development share to Rs 1.2 million.

He added that, following the recent NEPA incident, the city administration decided to introduce a dedicated monthly fund to ensure timely and effective resolution of safety‑related issues in all neighborhoods.

The Mayor confirmed that the new funds will be released starting in December, enabling Union Committees to address civic problems more efficiently.
