Macron Urges Netanyahu to Avoid Lebanon Ground Offensive

Date:

Paris, France – Web Desk: French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to avoid launching a ground offensive in Lebanon, warning that military escalation could threaten regional stability.

The appeal came during the leaders’ first phone conversation since last summer as Israeli forces advanced into several border towns and villages in southern Lebanon. Macron emphasized the importance of preserving Lebanon’s territorial integrity and called for de-escalation.

Lebanon, a former French protectorate, was drawn into the ongoing Middle East conflict after the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel in response to recent hostilities. France has called on Hezbollah to immediately cease its operations against Israel and avoid further escalation.

Macron also held discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, reiterating France’s commitment to Lebanon’s stability and political sovereignty.

Relations between Macron and Netanyahu deteriorated last year after France announced its intention to recognize Palestinian statehood, a move that Israel criticized. France formally recognized a Palestinian state in late 2025, shortly before a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip temporarily reduced hostilities.

Diplomatic tensions have persisted, with Israeli officials previously signaling opposition to high-level French visits amid disagreements over Middle East policy.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump discussed ongoing military operations in Iran with Macron in a separate call, underscoring the interconnected nature of regional security concerns.

France remains closely monitoring developments in Lebanon and advocating for diplomatic solutions to prevent further military escalation.
