Lebanese President Defends Israel Talks Amid Public Backlash

Date:

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has once again defended his government’s decision to negotiate with Israel, rejecting criticism over the move and reaffirming Lebanon’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty.

Beirut, Lebanon – Web Desk: Speaking to a Christian political bloc led by Samir Geagea, Aoun said he would not retreat from the decision to engage in negotiations, stressing that the talks serve Lebanon’s national interests.

“I assure you that I will not back down from the decision to negotiate that I have taken,” Aoun said, adding that he remains committed to explaining to the Lebanese people the importance of the diplomatic path while safeguarding the country’s sovereignty at every stage.

The remarks come amid growing public criticism following last month’s framework agreement with Israel, which was co-signed by the United States. Critics argue that the agreement could limit Lebanon’s ability to respond if Israel fails to uphold its commitments under the deal.

The agreement has sparked political debate across Lebanon, with opposition figures and sections of the public questioning its long-term implications for the country’s security and foreign policy.

Despite the criticism, President Aoun maintained that diplomacy remains the most effective path forward, reaffirming Lebanon’s commitment to protecting its national interests while pursuing regional stability.
