Pakistan Says Lasting South Asian Peace Requires Kashmir Settlement

Date:

Pakistan has reiterated that a durable peace in South Asia cannot be achieved without resolving the Kashmir dispute, renewing calls for dialogue and a peaceful settlement between Pakistan and India.

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK Pakistan has reiterated that lasting peace and stability in South Asia cannot be achieved without a just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, renewing its call for international engagement on the issue.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Islamabad’s position in a message marking Kashmir Black Day on October 27, 2026. He called for a settlement consistent with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Pakistan renews call for international action

The prime minister said Pakistan would continue providing political, moral and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people and advocating their rights at national and international forums.

He also called attention to the longstanding nature of the dispute, which remains a source of tension between Pakistan and India. Pakistan maintains that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir should be determined in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and the right to self-determination.

October 27 is observed in Pakistan as Kashmir Black Day, commemorating the arrival of Indian forces in Srinagar on October 27, 1947, an event associated with the beginning of the region’s prolonged conflict.

Leaders highlight Kashmir dispute

President Asif Ali Zardari also stressed the connection between a peaceful resolution of the dispute and regional stability. He urged the international community, particularly the United Nations and international human rights organisations, to support efforts to protect the fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar similarly called for sustained international engagement and reiterated Islamabad’s support for a peaceful settlement.

The government has repeatedly argued that meaningful progress requires dialogue, respect for international obligations and attention to the political aspirations of the people affected by the dispute.

A longstanding regional challenge

The Jammu and Kashmir dispute has remained a major point of disagreement between Pakistan and India since partition in 1947. The two countries have fought multiple wars and experienced repeated periods of military and diplomatic tension.

The United Nations Security Council has adopted resolutions concerning the dispute, although differences over their interpretation and implementation have persisted. India and Pakistan maintain differing positions on the region’s status and the conditions for resolving the dispute.

Pakistan’s latest statements renew its call for international involvement and a negotiated settlement, while the broader diplomatic challenge remains unresolved.

The latest appeals come amid continued debate over regional security, human rights and the prospects for improving relations between the two neighbouring countries.
