Khyber’s Bara Bazaar Shut After Violent Protests, Heavy Police Deployment Ordered

BARA, KHYBER, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK Authorities ordered the closure of Bara Bazaar in Khyber district on Wednesday, October 14, following violent clashes between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters and police during protests against the imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

All shops and markets in the area were directed to remain closed for the day. Heavy police contingents were deployed at the entry and exit points of the bazaar to maintain law and order and prevent further unrest.

District Police Officer Waqar Ahmed said the previous day’s demonstrations had turned violent, with protesters setting fire to a National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) office and throwing stones at a Rescue 1122 facility.

Four police personnel were injured during the incidents, while police announced the arrest of 62 people and the registration of terrorism-related cases.

Bara Protests Turn Violent

The unrest erupted on Tuesday when PTI supporters gathered at Khyber Chowk in Bara Bazaar to protest against governor’s rule in the province and the imposition of emergency measures in several districts.

The demonstration escalated into clashes between protesters and law enforcement personnel. Police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowd, while reports also emerged of gunfire during the confrontation.

Government buildings were damaged, and fires were reported at the NADRA office and part of a Rescue 1122 facility.

The violence prompted authorities to restrict access to the market and deploy additional security personnel in the surrounding area.

Heavy Police Presence as Market Remains Closed

The closure of Bara Bazaar has disrupted normal commercial activity, affecting shopkeepers, traders and customers who rely on the market for daily business.

Police personnel have been stationed at key access points, with authorities seeking to prevent further clashes and restore normality.

The shutdown comes amid heightened political tensions across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the federal government’s decision to impose governor’s rule and emergency measures in selected districts.

Security Situation Remains Under Watch

Authorities are monitoring the situation in Bara as security measures remain in place following the clashes. The closure is intended to limit further disruption while law enforcement agencies maintain control of the area.

The duration of the market shutdown beyond October 14 has not been confirmed. Traders and residents await further instructions from the local administration regarding the resumption of normal commercial activities.
