NCCIA rescues 13-year-old Karachi girl in suspected online network case

Date:

A 13-year-old girl in Karachi has reportedly been rescued after receiving dangerous instructions online, highlighting concerns about children’s digital safety and the risks of online manipulation.

WEB DESK: A 13-year-old girl has been rescued in Karachi after allegedly receiving dangerous instructions from an online network suspected of having links to the dark web.

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) intervened after receiving intelligence shared by an international agency about suspicious online activity. Investigators traced an internet protocol (IP) address associated with the activity to Karachi and discovered that the person linked to it was a potential victim rather than a perpetrator, officials said.

How investigators identified the girl

According to the report published on October 23, the girl had allegedly become involved with an online group that assigned her a series of dangerous tasks.

Officials said the first task involved poisoning a cat, which reportedly died. The group subsequently instructed the girl to seriously harm herself, but investigators located her before she acted on the second instruction.

The case emerged after an international agency shared information and IP addresses associated with suspicious activity in 13 countries, including Pakistan. NCCIA investigators examined the Pakistani connection as part of efforts to identify those involved.

Parents reportedly unaware of online activity

NCCIA officials said the girl’s parents were unaware of her involvement with the online network until investigators contacted them.

According to the agency’s account, the parents reported noticing changes in their daughter’s behaviour over the preceding six months but had not connected them to her online activities.

Authorities informed the family about the suspected online interactions and the potential risks facing the teenager. The girl’s identity has not been disclosed, in keeping with the need to protect a minor involved in a sensitive investigation.

Investigation into suspected network continues

Investigators are tracing the online accounts used to contact the girl and attempting to identify the individuals operating the suspected network.

Officials are also examining whether other children in Pakistan may have been targeted through similar activities. No arrests had been announced in the reports reviewed, and the identities of the suspected operators remain undisclosed.

The suspected connection to the dark web remains part of the reported investigation. The available reporting does not establish the identities of those responsible or the full structure of the network.

What parents should know about online safety

The case highlights the risks children can face when interacting with strangers through online games, messaging services and social media.

Parents and guardians can help protect children by maintaining open conversations about online experiences, encouraging them to report threatening or coercive messages, and paying attention to sudden changes in behaviour.

If a child receives instructions to hurt themselves or someone else, adults should take the situation seriously, preserve relevant messages where safe to do so, report the account to the platform and seek appropriate emergency or professional support if there is an immediate risk.

Children who have been manipulated online should be treated first and foremost as people who need protection and support.
