Washington, DC – Web Desk (May 15, 2026): The United States has announced a 45-day extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon following two days of diplomatic talks in Washington, according to a statement from the US State Department.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Piggott described the negotiations as “extremely positive and productive,” adding that both parties have agreed to maintain the ceasefire.
The next round of political negotiations between Israel and Lebanon is scheduled for June 2 and 3, while security talks between military delegations from both countries will begin at the Pentagon on May 29.
Background of the Ceasefire
The Israel-Lebanon ceasefire first came into effect on April 16, 2026, through US mediation. Initially agreed as a 10-day truce, it was subsequently extended by three weeks. This latest 45-day extension marks the third phase of the agreement.
Ongoing Clashes Despite Truce
Despite the formal ceasefire, border clashes have not completely ceased. Israel has continued to target Hezbollah positions, while Hezbollah has launched rocket and drone attacks in response.
Lebanon maintains that Israel must fully withdraw from southern Lebanon and halt all attacks. Israel, meanwhile, insists that Hezbollah must be disarmed as a precondition for any lasting peace.
Hezbollah’s Stance
Notably, Hezbollah has not participated directly in the ceasefire negotiations to date and has refused to disarm, despite being a part of the Lebanese parliament.
