Jerusalem, Israel – Web Desk: Authorities in Israel have announced a ban on Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque, citing heightened security concerns following recent regional tensions. The decision also restricts access to other major religious sites in Jerusalem, including the Western Wall, the Temple Mount, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Brigadier General Hisham Ibrahim of the Israeli Civil Administration said the closures were implemented in response to the security situation after retaliatory strikes between Iran and Israel. Officials confirmed that no worshippers or pilgrims—regardless of religion—would be permitted entry on Friday.
The announcement follows escalating military operations between Israel, the United States, and Iran, which have heightened regional instability. Authorities in Israel cited concerns about potential unrest and security risks as justification for restricting access to sensitive religious locations.
The closure has drawn criticism from religious leaders. Sheikh Ikrimah Sabri, senior imam of Al-Aqsa, condemned the restrictions, arguing that the mosque is frequently closed by Israeli authorities without valid justification. He stated that such measures undermine religious freedom and exacerbate tensions.
Access to the compound has been a longstanding point of dispute. While non-Muslims are permitted to visit during designated hours, prayer and display of religious symbols are prohibited under current arrangements. The site is administered by Jordan, while security control remains with Israeli authorities.
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has previously advocated for expanded Jewish prayer rights at the site, a position that has sparked controversy and heightened sensitivities surrounding the compound.
The restrictions come amid broader geopolitical tensions and ongoing debates over access to holy sites in Jerusalem. Observers warn that prolonged closures could inflame public sentiment and complicate diplomatic efforts to reduce regional hostilities.
