Baghdad, Iraq – Web Desk (May 16, 2026): Iraq’s newly appointed Prime Minister Ali Al-Zayadi officially assumed charge of his office on Saturday, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
A ceremony was held in the capital Baghdad where the new prime minister formally took over his duties.
On May 14, the Iraqi parliament expressed confidence in Al-Zayadi and 14 members of his cabinet, while voting on nine other ministerial positions was postponed.
On April 27, the major parliamentary bloc – the Coordination Framework Alliance – agreed to nominate Al-Zayadi for the prime ministership. Subsequently, Iraqi President Nizar Al-Ami entrusted him with the responsibility of forming the government.
Under Iraq’s political quota system, the presidency is held by a Kurdish representative, the prime ministership by a Shia representative, and the parliamentary speakership by a Sunni representative.
