Iran’s IRGC Navy Threatens to Sink US Warships Near Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, IRAN — WEB DESK | October 14, 2026

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has threatened to sink US warships if they approach the Strait of Hormuz, escalating an already tense standoff around a vital international shipping route.

Rear Admiral Ali Azmaei, a senior IRGC Navy commander, made the threat in televised remarks on Tuesday, October 13. He said Iranian forces were waiting for American warships to approach the entrance to the strait and claimed Iran was prepared for a direct confrontation.

Azmaei also claimed that a US aircraft carrier had moved approximately 700 kilometres, or 435 miles, away from the waterway because of its vulnerability. That assertion has not been independently established in the information reviewed.

US and Iran Trade Claims Over Strait Control

The remarks come amid competing claims by Tehran and Washington over control of the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and provides a crucial route for international energy shipments.

US Central Command has rejected the IRGC’s claim of control, stating that American forces and regional partners control the waterway. The opposing statements underline the risk of further confrontation as both sides seek to demonstrate their military position.

Shipping Risks Intensify

Maritime security concerns have increased following attacks and reported incidents involving commercial vessels in and around the strait. The IRGC has previously claimed responsibility for striking a tanker that it accused of ignoring warnings and using an unauthorised route.

The deteriorating security environment has placed commercial shipping and energy transportation under pressure. Ship operators face potential disruption, longer routes and increased security risks if the confrontation escalates.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important energy chokepoints. Any sustained disruption to vessel traffic could affect oil shipments, shipping costs and international energy markets.

Risk of Further Military Escalation

Iran’s latest warning signals that maritime movements near the strait remain a major flashpoint in its confrontation with the United States.

However, the threat itself does not establish that a direct naval clash is imminent. The claims made by Iranian commanders about US naval movements and the balance of control remain disputed.

The situation will depend in part on subsequent military actions, shipping activity and whether Washington and Tehran take steps to prevent further escalation in the Gulf.
