Iran Slams EU Objection to Right of Self-Defense as ‘Hypocritical’

Date:

TEHRAN – Web Desk: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has strongly reacted to a European Union statement regarding Iran’s right to self-defense, describing it as “hypocritical and irresponsible.”

In his statement, Baghaei said the EU must adhere to international law, the UN Charter, and the principles of the rule of law, arguing that it is wrong to blame countries that exercise their right to self-defense in response to illegal attacks. He urged the EU to stop criticizing nations that take measures to defend their sovereignty and security.

The Iranian spokesman further stated that targeting military bases and assets used for attacks against a country falls within the framework of the right to self-defense under international law. He also noted that every state has a responsibility to prevent its territory, airspace, or resources from being used for attacks against another country.

Regarding the regional situation, Baghaei said a lack of trust and continuously shifting US and Israeli policies toward Lebanon have slowed the diplomatic process, adding that a ceasefire in Lebanon is extremely important under current circumstances. He clarified that a ceasefire in Lebanon must be an essential and fundamental part of any potential agreement to end the war with the United States.
