Iran Says Oil Tanker Struck Mine in Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, IRAN — October 12, 2026: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy says an oil tanker struck a naval mine while attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz, triggering an explosion and fire in the vessel’s engine room amid escalating tensions over maritime access to the strategic waterway.

In a statement carried by Iranian state media, the IRGC Navy said the tanker was attempting to navigate a restricted route with its navigation system switched off. The vessel was reportedly carrying approximately 750,000 barrels of crude oil.

Iranian authorities described the incident as the third oil tanker to strike a naval mine along what they called a prohibited route since Saturday.

Tanker Identity Remains Unknown

The IRGC Navy did not identify the tanker, disclose its flag or specify the nationality of its crew. The circumstances surrounding the reported explosion, including the vessel’s condition and the extent of any damage, remain unclear.

The claim that the vessel struck a naval mine has not been independently established in the reporting reviewed for this article. Details about the incident should therefore be treated as an account provided by Iranian military authorities rather than a fully verified assessment.

The incident adds to concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage connecting the Persian Gulf with international waters.

Iran Warns Ships Against Unauthorised Transit

The IRGC Navy renewed its warning to vessels using routes it considers unauthorised. It said ships that switch off their navigation systems while transiting the strait could be classified as hostile.

Iran has maintained that vessels must follow routes designated by its authorities and comply with its instructions. The United States, meanwhile, has challenged Tehran’s restrictions on international maritime traffic and previously said its forces had removed Iranian naval mines from shipping lanes.

The competing positions have left commercial operators facing uncertainty over safe passage through the waterway.

Global Oil and Shipping Risks

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical corridor for international energy supplies. Disruptions to tanker movements can delay crude shipments, increase shipping and insurance costs, and contribute to volatility in global oil markets.

The latest reported incident comes as diplomatic efforts to resolve the wider US-Iran conflict remain strained. Iran has also disputed US claims about access to the strait and called for changes to the arrangements governing maritime movement.

The identity of the tanker, the independently verified cause of the explosion and the impact on shipping traffic remain key unanswered questions. Further confirmation from maritime authorities or the vessel’s operator would help establish the full circumstances of the incident.
