Iran Denies Rift With Houthis, Says Relations Remain Strong
TEHRAN, IRAN — WEB DESK: Iran has rejected reports of growing tensions with Yemen’s Houthi movement, insisting that relations remain strong despite speculation over differences between Tehran and the group amid heightened regional tensions.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed suggestions of a rift and said relations between Iran and the Houthis remained strong.
His remarks followed reports suggesting differences had emerged between Tehran and the Yemeni group following recent regional developments.
Araghchi said Iran’s relations with the Houthis had not deteriorated and rejected claims that tensions had developed between the two sides.
The comments come at a sensitive moment in the Middle East, where Houthi military activity has become a major regional security issue.
The Houthis have carried out attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and maritime routes, increasing concerns over security in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways.
Iran has faced renewed scrutiny over its relationship with the group. Tehran has long expressed political support for the Houthis, while the United States, Saudi Arabia and other governments have accused Iran of providing military assistance to the movement.
Iran has disputed aspects of those allegations and maintains that the Houthis make their own political and military decisions.
Recent diplomatic efforts have also focused on reducing regional tensions and preventing further escalation involving Yemen and neighbouring Gulf states.
Pakistan has been involved in diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions, while Iranian officials have publicly called for dialogue as part of attempts to contain the regional crisis.
The latest statement from Tehran appears intended to counter speculation that recent diplomatic moves or disagreements over regional strategy have damaged Iran’s relationship with the Houthis.
The extent of Iran’s influence over Houthi military decision-making remains contested. Tehran describes the movement as an independent actor, while its regional and Western rivals maintain that Iranian support has significantly strengthened the group’s military capabilities.
With regional tensions remaining elevated, relations between Iran and the Houthis are likely to remain closely watched as diplomatic efforts continue.
