Iran Challenges US to Escort Oil Tankers Through Hormuz Strait

Date:

Tehran, Iran – Web Desk: Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have challenged the United States to escort oil tankers through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions as conflict in the Middle East disrupts global shipping routes and energy exports.

According to Iranian state media, Guards spokesperson Alimohammad Naini responded to comments by Donald Trump, who earlier said the United States Navy could begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz if necessary.

“The United States is welcome to escort oil tankers, and we are awaiting their presence,” Naini said, in remarks reported by state media.

The confrontation comes amid heightened tensions following US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, which have intensified security risks across the Middle East. Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes — has slowed significantly due to safety concerns.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have reportedly warned commercial vessels against crossing the waterway after multiple attacks on shipping in recent days. Maritime security sources say at least nine vessels have been targeted since the escalation began.

Naini also referenced past incidents during the Tanker War, including the attack on the Bridgeton oil tanker, urging Washington to consider historical precedents before deploying naval escorts.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial global energy chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes daily. Any prolonged disruption could push oil prices higher and trigger wider economic consequences for international markets.

Analysts warn that further escalation between Iran and the United States could significantly affect global energy security and maritime trade routes.
