India’s Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke released a day after detention

Date:

Abhijeet Dipke was granted conditional bail after being detained ahead of a rally demanding the resignation of India’s election chief.

NEW DELHI, INDIA — WEB DESK: Abhijeet Dipke, founder of India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), was released on conditional bail on Saturday, a day after being detained ahead of a planned protest in New Delhi, according to Indian media reports.

Dipke was produced before a Special Executive Magistrate after police detained him on Friday while he was preparing to participate in a demonstration under the “Lehra Do Tiranga” campaign.

The protest was intended to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over disputed revisions to India’s electoral rolls.

Dipke was released after signing a peace bond. The conditions reportedly require him to maintain public peace, with reports indicating a one-year period.

Why was Abhijeet Dipke detained?

Delhi Police had issued a notice opposing the planned demonstration, citing restrictions on the gathering. Police subsequently detained Dipke ahead of the proposed march in central New Delhi.

Media reports said the authorities acted under preventive provisions intended to prevent a possible breach of peace. The precise legal proceedings and conditions of release should be confirmed against the relevant magistrate’s order.

Dipke’s release does not mean the broader dispute surrounding the protest has been resolved.

Protest targets voter-list revisions

The Cockroach Janta Party, student organisations and opposition groups have been protesting changes to India’s electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision process.

Critics allege that the revisions could disproportionately affect voters and benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Election Commission has denied political bias and maintained that voters whose names were wrongly removed can re-enrol.

The dispute has intensified scrutiny of how voter records are reviewed, which safeguards are available to people affected by deletions and how electoral authorities communicate changes to the public.

The number of names removed from electoral rolls has been widely reported as exceeding 130 million. However, deletions alone do not establish how many eligible voters were wrongly excluded.

Student activist Neha Bora also released

Neha Bora, president of the All India Students’ Association, was also detained during the latest round of protest-related police action and was subsequently released, according to media reports.

Bora has called for Kumar’s impeachment and urged authorities to halt the voter-list revision process. Her position reflects the demands of protesters, rather than an independently established finding of wrongdoing by the election chief.

The protests have also prompted police action against other demonstrators in New Delhi, with authorities citing restrictions on gatherings and public-order concerns.
