PTAP leaders condemn Imaan Mazari’s sentence, hint at nationwide protest and jail bharo movement
Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: The controversial sentencing of Imaan Mazari and her husband has triggered strong reactions from political leaders, with the Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Aain Pakistan (PTAP) indicating the possibility of launching a “Jail Bharo” movement in protest.
During a high-profile visit to Mazari House, PTAP leadership, including Chairman and opposition National Assembly member Mahmood Khan Achakzai, met with Imaan Mazari’s mother and former federal minister Dr. Shireen Mazari, expressing complete solidarity and condemnation over the recent judicial verdict.
Following the meeting, Achakzai told the media that the party is evaluating the next steps, including the potential launch of a nationwide jail bharo agitation. “We may announce a Jail Bharo movement soon. Let’s see how many people the authorities can incarcerate,” he remarked.
Senior PTAP leaders Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar and Barrister Gohar also criticized the verdict, describing it as an attack on democratic rights. Khokhar highlighted that the ruling reflects a growing authoritarian trend in Pakistan, warning that such decisions are steering the nation toward a model reminiscent of North Korea or Egypt.
“This country is under virtual military-style authoritarian rule. Anyone who dares to raise their voice for rights is immediately silenced,” Khokhar added, stressing that such judicial outcomes undermine democracy and the rule of law.
The meeting underscored PTAP’s commitment to mobilizing public opinion and political action in support of the Mazari family, framing the verdict as an assault on civil liberties. Leaders emphasized that imprisonment or judicial penalties should not deter citizens from exercising their democratic rights, a principle that the party intends to defend vigorously.
Analysts note that PTAP’s potential Jail Bharo movement could serve as a major political flashpoint, drawing attention to wider debates on judicial accountability, freedom of expression, and political rights in Pakistan. The movement, if launched, is expected to mobilize supporters nationwide, especially among constituencies that view the judiciary’s actions as biased or politically motivated.
The Mazari verdict, coupled with escalating political tensions, has amplified concerns about the state of democracy in Pakistan, with PTAP positioning itself as a vocal advocate for citizens’ rights and challenging what it terms the authoritarian tendencies of the current establishment.
With the nation closely watching PTAP’s next moves, political observers anticipate heightened confrontations between authorities and opposition forces, potentially affecting governance, judicial processes, and public demonstrations across major cities.
