DUBAI: Indian cricket captain Suryakumar Yadav found himself in hot water after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lodged a formal complaint against him with the International Cricket Council (ICC) for making political remarks.
Yadav’s comments came during his post-match presentation and press conference after India’s victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 on September 14.
In his speech, Yadav dedicated the team’s win to the Indian armed forces, expressing solidarity with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. Later, during the press conference, he added: “Our government and BCCI were aligned today… We came here just to play the game.”
According to reports, the PCB filed a complaint with the ICC against Yadav’s political statements in the ground.
Sources indicate that the ICC has accepted PCB’s complaint for review, with Asia Cup match referee Richie Richardson overseeing the investigation. After examining the video evidence submitted by the PCB, the ICC is expected to take action if the comments are deemed inappropriate or against the spirit of the game.
However, sports analyst Shahid Hashmi believes there’s little chance of significant action for Yadav, given the Indian clout in the ICC.
“Although Pakistan has filed a formal complaint, there is currently no clause in the ICC’s code of conduct that directly addresses political statements. The maximum outcome could be a notice issued to Yadav,” Hashmi said. “It is possible that such a clause may be added in the future, but as of now, the code of conduct only prohibits remarks against other teams or players.”
Hashmi also pointed out that, due to India’s significant influence within the ICC, action on the PCB complaint is unlikely.
