Hollywood-Style’ Highway Robbery in Egypt Goes Viral, 3 Suspects Killed
CAIRO, EGYPT — WEB DESK: A dramatic video showing thieves stealing cargo from a moving refrigerated truck on an Egyptian highway has gone viral, with social media users comparing the dangerous operation to a Hollywood action sequence.
The incident occurred on the Cairo-Ismailia Desert Road on August 25, according to Egyptian media reports citing the Interior Ministry. A pickup truck was driven closely behind a refrigerated lorry carrying frozen poultry, allowing members of the group to remove part of its cargo while both vehicles remained in motion.
The truck driver was apparently unaware that goods were being taken from the rear of his vehicle during the incident, authorities said.
Viral Video Shows Unusual Moving Heist
Footage circulating online shows the pickup moving dangerously close to the back of the larger truck.
One of the individuals can be seen climbing towards the front of the pickup and reaching the rear of the lorry before its doors are opened. Boxes are then removed from the moving truck and transferred to the pickup.
The unusual method quickly attracted attention online, where the robbery was dubbed a “Hollywood-style” heist and compared with scenes from action films.
However, Egyptian authorities later confirmed that the footage depicted a real incident rather than a staged social-media video.
Truck Was Carrying Frozen Chicken
Investigators determined that the targeted vehicle belonged to a refrigerated transport company.
The truck was travelling on the Cairo-Ismailia Desert Road and was carrying a consignment of frozen poultry for delivery to a company in 10th of Ramadan City when the pickup began following it.
The occupants then allegedly stole part of the cargo without the driver noticing what was happening behind him.
Egyptian authorities said they had not initially received a formal complaint about the incident. Police instead launched their investigation after detecting the widely circulated video on social media.
Police Identify Six Suspects
Investigators subsequently identified six people whom Egypt’s Interior Ministry described as members of a dangerous criminal group.
According to the ministry’s account carried by Egyptian media, members of the group had previous accusations or convictions involving offences including armed robbery, attempted murder, drug trafficking, illegal firearms possession and causing permanent injury.
Authorities tracked the suspects to locations in Cairo and Qalyubia governorates before launching an operation to arrest them.
Three Killed, Three Arrested
Egypt’s Interior Ministry said the suspects opened fire on security personnel when officers moved to apprehend them.
Police returned fire during the confrontation, leaving three suspects dead and three others under arrest, according to the ministry’s account.
Because the details of the fatal confrontation come from Egyptian authorities, they should be attributed to the Interior Ministry rather than described as an independently established reconstruction of the exchange.
Authorities said officers also recovered two automatic rifles, a shotgun, another locally described firearm, ammunition, the vehicle allegedly used in the robbery and stolen goods linked to this and other suspected thefts.
Legal proceedings against the three detained suspects are continuing, according to local reporting.
Viral Stunt Becomes Criminal Investigation
The case initially attracted attention because of the extraordinary way the theft was carried out, but the subsequent investigation turned the viral clip into a serious criminal case.
The footage illustrates the danger posed not only by the alleged theft itself but also by the manoeuvre of positioning two vehicles extremely close together while travelling on a highway.
Egyptian authorities say their investigation began after the video surfaced online, demonstrating how viral footage can itself trigger a police inquiry even when no initial complaint has been filed.
The episode has since spread beyond Egyptian social media, with international reports highlighting the resemblance between the moving-vehicle robbery and action-film sequences
