NDMA issues alert as western winds bring snow, rain, and severe cold nationwide
Islamabad, Pakistan: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) have issued warnings for heavy rain, snow, and a severe cold wave across the country next week. According to official forecasts, western weather systems will reach northern regions starting from January 19, intensifying from January 20, with widespread impact expected by January 21.
The NDMA National Emergency Operations Center has issued alerts for Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir, warning of potentially dangerous cold conditions. These systems are expected to bring intermittent rain and snowfall across these regions. From January 18–20, Muree and Galiyat will likely experience snow and rainfall, while Islamabad and surrounding Punjab districts may witness rain from January 20–23.
Further north, the western winds could cause landslides and traffic disruptions in hilly regions. The PMD has also warned that upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir may face snow-related transportation challenges. Snow accumulation and slippery roads pose safety risks, especially for tourists and local commuters. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and take necessary precautions.
In Balochistan, rain and snow are expected in various districts between January 21–23, while southern regions like Sindh may see rainfall around January 22–23. In lowland areas, cold and dry weather may produce frost, potentially damaging crops and orchards.
Authorities emphasize that severe cold conditions can affect children, the elderly, and patients, and recommend safe use of heaters and warm clothing. Provincial and district administrations have been instructed to prepare essential machinery and emergency resources to ensure safe transportation and electricity supply in snow-prone areas. Tourist accommodations are advised to be ready to manage the influx of visitors safely.
NDMA and PMD urge residents to follow official weather updates via TV, radio, verified social media accounts, and the NDMA Disaster Alert app for real-time information. Citizens are warned to stay alert for avalanche risks, slippery roads, and travel hazards in mountainous regions.
This upcoming weather event marks a significant nationwide cold wave, highlighting the importance of public preparedness and timely preventive measures. Authorities stress that early action and awareness are critical to minimize the impact of snow, rain, and severe cold on daily life and infrastructure.
