Berlin, Germany – Web Desk: German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has sharply criticized the United States’ war against Iran, calling it a “catastrophic political mistake” and a violation of international law.
Speaking at an event in Berlin, Steinmeier condemned former US President Donald Trump for initiating the conflict, stating that the justification of an imminent threat from Iran was weak and unacceptable. He emphasized that the war could have been avoided and described it as unnecessary and damaging.
The German president warned that the conflict has caused a serious rift in transatlantic relations, significantly straining ties between Germany and the United States. He added that the impact of Trump’s second presidency has reshaped US-Europe relations in a way comparable to the shift seen after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Steinmeier noted that just as Europe’s relationship with Russia cannot return to its previous state, relations between the US and Europe may also never fully recover to their former level.
