PARIS – Web Desk: The French Navy has seized a Russian oil tanker in the Atlantic Ocean, according to media reports.
French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on X that the Russian vessel, named Tagor, was violating international sanctions, leading to the operation. He said the operation was carried out with the support of several partners, including the United Kingdom. “It is unacceptable for ships to violate international sanctions and financially support the war Russia has launched against Ukraine,” Macron added.
The Atlantic Maritime Prefecture, in a separate statement, said the French Navy intercepted the oil tanker coming from Russia approximately 740 kilometers west of Brittany. France and the UK have both committed to intercepting vessels linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” passing through their waters. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced in March that he had authorized British forces to intercept ships belonging to the shadow fleet.
