Egypt produced a stunning performance against defending champions Argentina, taking a 2-0 lead in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash in Atlanta.
Atlanta, United States – Web Desk: Egypt opened the scoring in the first half through Yasser Ibrahim, giving the African side an early advantage against Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
Argentina had a golden opportunity to equalise after being awarded a penalty. However, captain Lionel Messi failed to convert from the spot as Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier made a brilliant save to preserve his team’s lead.
Egypt appeared to have doubled its advantage through Mostafa Zico, but the goal was ruled out for a foul by the referee.
Shortly afterwards, Mostafa Zico found the net again with a well-taken finish, this time the goal stood, extending Egypt’s lead to 2-0 and putting the defending champions under immense pressure.
The match remains in progress as Argentina search for a comeback to keep their FIFA World Cup title defence alive.
