Pakistan says Field Marshal Asim Munir’s Iran visit was part of diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions and promote a negotiated solution.
ISLAMABAD – Web Desk: Pakistan’s Foreign Office has clarified that Field Marshal Asim Munir’s recent visit to Iran was not made on behalf of US President Donald Trump or the United States.
Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi made the clarification during the weekly media briefing in Islamabad, saying the visit was part of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions and encouraging a negotiated solution to the crisis in the Middle East.
The spokesperson said discussions during the visit focused on ways to de-escalate tensions in the region and explore diplomatic avenues for resolving outstanding issues.
Pakistan pursuing diplomatic efforts
Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan remains engaged with brotherly countries as part of its efforts to help reduce tensions in the region and contribute to a resolution of the wider Middle East crisis.
He said Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts are aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region, while also creating conditions that could help facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global maritime route.
According to the Foreign Office, the Iranian leadership has also appreciated Pakistan’s role and diplomatic efforts in seeking a peaceful way forward.
Prime Minister to attend SCO summit
The Foreign Office spokesperson also said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, where he is expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the gathering.
Pakistan has assumed the SCO chairmanship for one year, the spokesperson said.
He added that Pakistan is scheduled to host the SCO summit in Islamabad in 2027.
Pakistan’s diplomatic role
The clarification regarding Field Marshal Asim Munir’s Iran visit comes as Pakistan continues diplomatic contacts with regional countries amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
Islamabad has consistently emphasized dialogue, de-escalation and diplomatic engagement as mechanisms for addressing regional crises.
The Foreign Office’s latest remarks indicate that Pakistan views its engagement with Iran as part of its own diplomatic initiative rather than as an assignment or representation of the United States or President Trump.
