MQM Pakistan calls for judicial commission after Gul Plaza tragedy; CM, Minister, Mayor urged to step down
Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: Senior MQM Pakistan leader Dr. Farooq Sattar has demanded the resignation of Sindh Chief Minister, Information Minister, and Karachi Mayor, calling for a judicial commission to investigate the Gul Plaza tragedy. Addressing the media in Bahadurabad, Sattar criticized the provincial government for what he termed negligence and failure to ensure public safety.
Farooq Sattar said that questions regarding the Gul Plaza incident were being ignored, with key leaders displaying irritation. “The Sindh government has been in power for 18 years, creating new records of obstinacy and ego,” he said, emphasizing that accountability cannot be ignored. He asserted that MQM Pakistan will not allow the CM, Information Minister, or Karachi Mayor to divert attention from the incident, insisting that a judicial commission must be formed.
Highlighting security concerns, Sattar claimed that MQM leaders, including Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, had their security withdrawn despite ongoing threats, questioning whether federal authorities in Islamabad would provide protection. He raised the city’s rising street crimes, incidents of children falling into drains, and other safety issues, urging the federal government to take control under Article 141 if Sindh fails to safeguard Karachi’s residents.
Sattar also criticized federal statements about Karachi’s population, stressing that the provincial government is failing to fulfill its responsibilities. He reiterated that the MQM holds the city’s mandate and would ensure justice for the victims of Gul Plaza. “We are not asking these leaders directly to resign; we are urging Bilawal Bhutto to hold them accountable and form a judicial commission immediately,” he said.
The MQM leader further condemned delays in Karachi’s forensic lab project, calling it merely a building despite an investment of billions of rupees, contrasting it with small-scale lab initiatives by Karachi University faculty. Farooq Sattar also predicted that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would be ineffective in the 2029 elections if current governance continues.
Sattar’s statements come amid heightened political tension in Karachi, where demands for accountability and safety reforms continue to grow following the Gul Plaza incident. The MQM Pakistan leader vowed to continue advocating for the people’s rights and ensuring justice for the victims, urging immediate action from both the provincial and federal governments.
