EU Says Iran Sanctions Could Be Eased if US Deal Reached

Date:

Nicosia, Cyprus – Web Desk: The European Union has indicated it could consider easing sanctions on Iran if a comprehensive agreement is reached between Tehran and the United States, amid renewed diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.

According to reports, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told European leaders that a potential deal with Iran could open the door to gradual sanctions relief, which may help advance a sustained ceasefire process.

The development comes as European leaders convene in Cyprus for a high-level summit with counterparts from Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon to discuss regional security and Iran-related issues.

Meanwhile, European Council President Antonio Costa called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without restrictions or tariffs, stressing its critical importance for global energy supplies.

Ahead of the summit, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned that failure to reach a strong agreement—similar to the Iran nuclear deal 2015—could result in a more volatile and potentially dangerous Iran.

She also recalled that the agreement was abandoned by former US President Donald Trump during his first term, a move that reshaped the trajectory of Iran-related diplomacy.

Analysts say the EU’s stance reflects a broader push to reduce tensions, revive diplomatic channels, and stabilize global energy markets amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
