TRENTON – Web Desk: Dr. Adam Hamawy, a plastic surgeon, former US military officer, and volunteer medical worker in conflict zones, has won the Democratic Party primary for a US congressional seat in New Jersey, according to election results.
The Egyptian-American physician secured victory in a competitive multi-candidate race in New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District. He will now face Republican candidate Greg Mele in the midterm elections in November. The district is considered a Democratic stronghold, and political analysts believe Hamawy’s chances of reaching the US House of Representatives are strong.
Dr. Hamawy has served in the US military and has participated in medical relief activities in various war-torn regions, including volunteering in Gaza in 2024. If he wins the November election, he could become the only member of the US Congress to have directly witnessed the Gaza war and its humanitarian conditions.
In an interview, Hamawy said that after his medical mission in Gaza, a visit to Washington convinced him to enter politics. He stated that America needs elected representatives who can make courageous decisions after seeing facts and speak out against wrong things. Analysts suggest his victory could spark a new debate in US politics, particularly regarding policies on Gaza, the Middle East, and human rights.
