Dhananjaya de Silva Resigns as Sri Lanka Test Captain Before Pakistan Tour

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA — WEB DESK: Sri Lankan all-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva has stepped down as captain of the national Test cricket team with immediate effect, marking a leadership change ahead of Sri Lanka’s upcoming tour of Pakistan.

Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed the resignation on Thursday, October 8, announcing that the experienced cricketer had decided to relinquish his leadership responsibilities while remaining available for selection as a player.

De Silva said the time had come for a younger generation to take charge of the Test team, indicating that his decision was intended to support a transition in leadership.

Although he will no longer lead Sri Lanka in the longest format, the all-rounder intends to continue representing his country on the international stage.

Sri Lanka Cricket acknowledged his contribution as Test captain and expressed appreciation for his leadership and services to the national side.

The cricket board also welcomed his decision to remain available as a player, allowing the team to retain his experience during the transition.

The resignation comes at an important time for Sri Lankan cricket, with preparations underway for the upcoming Pakistan tour.

A change in Test captaincy before an international assignment will require team management and selectors to review leadership arrangements and establish responsibilities for the next captain.

Wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis has emerged as a possible candidate to replace De Silva.

However, no official appointment has been confirmed, and Mendis should not yet be regarded as Sri Lanka’s new Test captain.

The leadership transition is expected to attract considerable attention from cricket followers in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, particularly as both teams prepare for their next Test assignment.

De Silva’s continued availability could provide valuable experience to the batting lineup and help the incoming captain maintain continuity within the squad.

His decision also separates his future as an international cricketer from the responsibilities of leading the Test side.

Sri Lanka Cricket has not announced a confirmed successor or a timetable for naming the next captain.

Further details about the leadership appointment and arrangements for the Pakistan tour are expected to become clearer through subsequent official announcements.
