Debt, Taxes Push Pakistan Economy Under Pressure

Date:

(Web Desk) – Pakistan’s economy is once again facing intense pressure as rising public debt and a heavy tax burden slow down economic activity and deepen fiscal challenges.

Economic experts warn that persistent fiscal mismanagement continues to push the country toward international lenders, particularly the International Monetary Fund, for periodic bailout packages. While such programs provide short-term relief, analysts argue that structural weaknesses remain largely unaddressed.

According to recent figures, Pakistan’s total public debt has reached approximately 70 percent of GDP in 2025, while the fiscal deficit stands at around 6 percent — a level largely driven by interest payments on existing loans. Economists caution that net interest payments have now exceeded total tax revenues, raising concerns about long-term fiscal sustainability.

The growing imbalance has fueled fears of a potential fiscal crisis if reforms are delayed. Analysts note that the government’s primary revenue options remain limited to taxation and borrowing. However, tax collection performance has consistently fallen short of targets, while reliance on debt financing has significantly increased over the years.

Experts argue that without comprehensive tax reforms, expansion of the tax base, and structural adjustments to reduce dependency on borrowing, the economy may continue to face recurring cycles of crisis and stabilization programs.

Observers emphasize that sustainable economic recovery requires fiscal discipline, improved governance, export growth, and a broader documentation of the economy to reduce reliance on indirect taxation and external financing.
