Indian Wells, United States – Web Desk: Coco Gauff was forced to retire from her third-round match at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Sunday, March 8, 2026, due to a painful left arm injury, handing a walkover victory to Alexandra Eala of the Philippines.
The 21-year-old world No. 4 trailed 6-2, 2-0 when she decided to stop after 54 minutes. Gauff described the sensation as “a firework going off inside my arm,” followed by her entire arm feeling “like it was on fire.” The pain began in the second game of the first set and worsened progressively, even affecting shots not reliant on her left arm.
Gauff took a medical timeout when trailing 5-2 in the opening set. A trainer treated her shoulder and arm, and she returned with her forearm wrapped after being broken in the final game of the set. The discomfort persisted, prompting her to approach the net and concede.
The American, who relies on a powerful two-handed backhand, called the experience “scary” and plans to undergo an MRI for diagnosis. Medical staff suspect a nerve-related issue but believe it is not long-term. Gauff expressed optimism about recovering in time for the Miami Open, the second leg of the Sunshine Double.
This marks only the second mid-match retirement of Gauff’s career, the first occurring in 2022 against Marie Bouzkova in Cincinnati.
Eala, the 20-year-old 31st seed, advances to the last 16 where she will face Czech Linda Noskova. The Filipino player acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the win but praised her own performance.
“No one likes winning like that, and no one likes losing like that,” Eala said. “Nevertheless, I’m really happy with how I played… I hope I can make the best out of the momentum.”
Eala previously lost heavily to Gauff (6-0, 6-2) in the Dubai quarter-finals last month. She rose to prominence with a surprise Miami semi-final run in 2025, defeating Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys, and became the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam singles match at the 2025 US Open.
