China’s Self-Driving Taxis Stranded Mid-Road Due to System Glitch

Date:

Wuhan, China – Web Desk: A technical glitch caused multiple self-driving taxis in Wuhan to come to a standstill on city streets, leaving passengers stranded for hours. The incident occurred on the night of March 31, local authorities confirmed.

Passengers aboard the autonomous vehicles, including several operated by Apollo Go, reported that the cars stopped moving mid-road, creating delays and frustration. Social media posts from affected riders showed videos of the stationary taxis and described waiting up to 90 minutes for the system to resolve.

Police investigations revealed the issue stemmed from a malfunction within the taxis’ operating system. Officials said the company did not provide clear emergency procedures during the outage.

Wuhan currently operates over 500 driverless vehicles, with Apollo Go reporting usage by 3.4 million passengers across various Chinese cities in the fourth quarter of 2025. The company has not disclosed how many taxis were affected by this incident.

This event highlights the growing challenges of managing autonomous transport systems as China continues to expand the use of self-driving vehicles in urban areas.
