China says US sanctions will not solve Iran crisis

Date:

Beijing urges Washington to abandon “maximum pressure” and pursue dialogue to resolve tensions with Tehran.

WEB DESK: China has said that US sanctions and economic pressure will not resolve the crisis surrounding Iran, calling on Washington to abandon its “maximum pressure” approach and pursue dialogue.

The remarks came as tensions between the United States and Iran remain high following Washington’s latest sanctions targeting Tehran.

China’s position reflects Beijing’s longstanding opposition to unilateral sanctions and its calls for disputes involving Iran to be addressed through diplomatic channels.

Beijing calls for dialogue

Chinese officials have repeatedly argued that pressure and sanctions cannot provide a lasting solution to the disputes between Washington and Tehran.

Beijing has urged the United States to return to negotiations and resolve differences through political and diplomatic means rather than relying on economic coercion.

China has maintained close economic and diplomatic relations with Iran and has previously criticised US sanctions imposed without United Nations Security Council approval.

US increases economic pressure on Iran

The Chinese comments come as Washington continues to expand sanctions against Iran as part of its broader pressure campaign against Tehran.

US officials have argued that sanctions are intended to restrict Iran’s ability to finance activities that Washington considers destabilising and to compel Tehran to change its policies.

Iran, meanwhile, has repeatedly rejected what it describes as excessive or unjustified US pressure and has called for the removal of sanctions.

The dispute has added to concerns over regional security and the potential impact on global energy markets.

China seeks diplomatic solution

Beijing has positioned itself as a supporter of dialogue between Iran and Western powers, particularly over issues related to Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security.

Chinese officials have stressed that negotiations and mutual respect are necessary to prevent further escalation.

China’s latest remarks underline the widening diplomatic divide over how to deal with Tehran, with Washington favouring increased economic pressure while Beijing continues to advocate dialogue.

The developments come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where any further escalation between the United States and Iran could have broader consequences for regional stability, trade and energy supplies.
