Cargo Ship Hit by Projectile Near Iraq’s Umm Qasr Port

London / Gulf of Iraq – Web Desk: A cargo vessel travelling in the Gulf near Iraq’s Umm Qasr port has been struck by an unidentified projectile, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

In a statement, UKMTO said the incident occurred approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of Umm Qasr while the ship was in transit. The projectile reportedly hit the starboard side of the vessel, triggering a powerful explosion.

Authorities have not yet identified the source of the attack, and no immediate details were provided regarding casualties or the extent of damage.

The incident adds to growing concerns over maritime security in key shipping routes in the Gulf region, which has seen periodic disruptions amid regional tensions.

Investigations are ongoing.
