Canada School Shooting: 9 Dead, 18-Year-Old Female Suspect Identified

Date:

WEB DESK – In a shocking attack in Canada’s British Columbia, nine people, including students and a teacher, were killed in a school shooting in the town of Tumbler Ridge. Police have identified the primary suspect as 18-year-old Jessie Vann Rotselaar.

Authorities reported that prior to the school attack, the suspect allegedly killed her mother and stepbrother at home before taking her own life. Police described the events as a “single-perpetrator attack” and said investigations into the motive remain ongoing.

The suspect reportedly had a history of mental health issues and had been assessed under the Provincial Mental Health Act at various times, authorities said. Police cautioned against speculation on the motive at this stage.

Initial reports cited ten fatalities, but authorities later revised the number to nine, including the suspect. Among the victims at the school were one teacher and five students. Several others sustained injuries, with two in critical condition.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, postponing his European tour and ordering national flags to be flown at half-mast for seven days. Parliament observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims.

School shootings in Canada are rare, but this incident is being described as one of the deadliest in Canadian history. By comparison, in 2020, a mass shooting in Nova Scotia claimed 22 lives, and the 1989 Montreal Polytechnique massacre resulted in 14 student deaths.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect acted alone. Further investigations are underway to determine the full sequence of events and the underlying causes behind the attack.
