Bilawal Warns PTI That Imran Khan Could Remain in Prison Longer
KARACHI, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has warned that former Prime Minister Imran Khan could face a prolonged period in prison if Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) continues its current political strategy.
Speaking at the inauguration of a sports complex in Karachi’s Baldia Town on Friday, October 9, Bilawal urged PTI to reconsider its confrontational approach and return to parliamentary dialogue.
He argued that political boycotts and confrontation with other institutions were weakening the opposition party’s position.
Bilawal Urges PTI to Change Political Strategy
Bilawal acknowledged that PTI retained public support but said its political decisions were damaging its prospects.
He accused the party of pursuing what he described as extremist politics and refusing meaningful engagement with other political forces.
The PPP chairman argued that Pakistan’s political history demonstrated how politicians could move between imprisonment and positions of power.
However, he warned that PTI’s existing strategy could leave Imran Khan incarcerated for longer than former President Asif Ali Zardari, who spent approximately 14 years in prison during different periods.
The comparison was a political warning, not an announcement of a new prison sentence or judicial decision.
Imran Khan’s Imprisonment Remains a Political Flashpoint
Imran Khan has been imprisoned since 2023 and continues to face legal proceedings.
PTI maintains that cases against its founder are politically motivated, while the government rejects accusations of politically motivated persecution.
His detention remains central to PTI’s political campaign, including demonstrations demanding his release.
Bilawal’s remarks come amid renewed tensions between the opposition and the federal government following unsuccessful negotiations.
KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi Faces Criticism
The PPP chairman also criticised Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi over the province’s political and security situation.
Bilawal said the provincial leadership’s confrontational strategy risked weakening PTI’s political standing and undermining public confidence.
His remarks followed reports that federal authorities were considering constitutional measures in response to security and governance concerns in the province.
Governor’s Rule Should Be Last Resort, Bilawal Says
Bilawal said the federal government had recently considered emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He nevertheless argued that imposing governor’s rule should be treated as a last resort because of its potentially serious political consequences.
No formal declaration of governor’s rule was announced in his remarks.
Bilawal Criticises MQM Over New Province Demand
Addressing a separate political issue, Bilawal criticised the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) over calls for the creation of a new province.
He questioned the party’s electoral standing and argued that proposals for new administrative units should reflect public opinion.
Bilawal also called on federal ministers Mustafa Kamal and Mohsin Naqvi to visit cities and seek residents’ views on the issue.
Political Disagreements Continue
Bilawal’s statements highlight disagreements among Pakistan’s political parties over negotiations, provincial governance and the future of opposition politics.
His warning does not establish that Imran Khan’s imprisonment will be extended. Any change in Khan’s legal position depends on judicial proceedings and applicable law, rather than the PPP chairman’s political assessment.
The central development is Bilawal’s call for PTI to change its strategy, alongside his warning about the political consequences of continued confrontation.
