Bilawal Bhutto Proposes Fresh Talks With Opposition Amid KP Emergency

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has urged the federal government and opposition parties to resume negotiations, calling for political dialogue to resolve differences over the imposition of emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Addressing the National Assembly on Wednesday, Bilawal said the government should extend another offer of talks to the opposition and seek a middle ground instead of allowing political disagreements to deepen.

He stressed that Pakistan belonged to both the government and opposition, urging political parties to put aside their differences and work together to address the country’s security challenges.

Bilawal Calls for Renewed Political Dialogue

Bilawal said opposition parties had the right to oppose the emergency measures but should also play a constructive role in tackling terrorism.

He argued that negotiations should have been pursued before resorting to the constitutional measure and said the government should make another effort to bring opposition representatives to the negotiating table.

The PPP chairman also said emergency measures should not become permanent, emphasising the need for a political solution that could address security concerns while reducing confrontation between political parties.

KP Emergency and Political Responsibility

Discussing the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Bilawal criticised the provincial leadership over its handling of security challenges and questioned its response to the federal government’s concerns.

He maintained that counterterrorism efforts required cooperation across political lines and said all parties should contribute to restoring stability in the province.

Bilawal also defended the constitutional authority of the president to approve emergency measures, while stating that the federal government’s decision had been taken after efforts to avoid such a step.

He indicated that he intended to support the federal government’s decision in the National Assembly.

Call for Unity Against Terrorism

Bilawal urged political parties to set aside their differences and cooperate against militant violence, arguing that a divided political response would make it more difficult to address the security threat.

He also highlighted Pakistan’s wider regional security concerns and called for a united national response to terrorism.

The PPP chairman reiterated that political engagement remained necessary even amid serious disagreements, urging both sides to return to negotiations and find a workable compromise.

The latest appeal comes amid heightened political tensions following emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and disagreements between the federal government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Whether the renewed proposal will bring the government and opposition back to the negotiating table remains uncertain.
