Bilawal Bhutto defends BISP, calls targeting program ‘shameful.’

Date:

Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has strongly condemned criticism of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), calling attempts to target the welfare initiative “regrettable” and “shameful.”

Speaking in the National Assembly, Bilawal said that whether others defend the programme or not, his party will continue to stand firmly in its support.

He noted that both the federal government and provinces are facing financial challenges, adding that despite the 18th Amendment, provinces have not consistently received their due financial share.

Bilawal said various constitutional and political issues have been addressed through cooperation with the government, and provincial administrations have repeatedly made sacrifices in the national interest.

Referring to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he praised the provincial government for setting aside political differences and supporting national priorities, welcoming the move on the parliamentary floor.

He stressed that continued cooperation in the national interest would help Pakistan overcome challenges, highlighting that BISP remains a globally recognized poverty alleviation programme.

According to Bilawal, the initiative has provided support to millions of families and played a vital role during disasters such as floods and the COVID-19 pandemic.

He added that the government has committed to expanding BISP despite criticism and propaganda, with the prime minister reaffirming support for its continuation and growth.

Bilawal concluded that programmes like BISP strengthen public trust and social protection, and no effort to weaken them would succeed.
